Botox

Some of us may not mind the process and symptoms of aging, but some of us prefer to age as gracefully as possible. Botox allows us to preserve our healthy skin, slowing down the aging process in our most common prominent areas.

Botox (botulinum toxin type A, specifically OnabotulinumtoxinA) involves an injection into the muscles of the face responsible for creasing and wrinkling the skin. It works to temporarily relax the muscles it is injected into, softening our expression lines. Not only can it soften these lines that already exist, but it also prevents them deepening or from forming in the first place! (Starting Botox in your 20’s is the best way to prevent deep lines!)

Botox takes 4-10 days to fully kick in, then lasts an average of 3-4 months after settling. For some patients who are more active and have faster metabolisms, you may see your Botox typically last only about 2 months. The most common areas it’s used include the horizontal forehead lines, frown lines between the brows (11’s/the glabella), and the crow’s feet around the eyes. Botox is sold and distributed in units. For a “full face,” the average patient uses 50-60 units per treatment. For men, this tends to be closer to 60-70 units. More or less may be necessary depending on the areas being injected and the strength of the patient’s muscles. Less is typically used when we are simply preventing lines (Baby Botox). Minimal bruising or swelling directly at the injection site can occur, but usually only last a few days. Most patients leave with small red marks at the injection sites that clear in under an hour–it can be as simple as a quick injection during your lunch break, then returning to work unmarked. Makeup may be worn immediately after if desired.

For some patients, since you aren’t able to scowl as hard or tense up so easily (making those angry, concentrated expressions subconsciously or consciously), Botox can even alleviate tension headaches. It can also be used to relieve symptoms of TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) and hyperhidrosis (hyperactive sweating). There are so many purposes and benefits to this product in addition to cosmetic use.Once Botox wears off, your face goes right back to the way it was before, as the muscles will simply re-gain their strength. There are no permanent ties to Botox treatments, as it is a temporary injection. A patient could receive treatment once and never do it again, so this minimally invasive treatment has no commitment risk. The longer you continue with Botox treatments, though, the more you are slowing down the aging/wrinkling process, therefore keeping you feeling and looking youthful longer!

While Botox is in your system, you can continue living life and aging without your skin having to age with you. Laugh, smile, and express yourself while still retaining that glowing, plump, refreshed look.
